about

If Ever I Loved is a limited edition 7” release of new material from Monteal born chanteuse Angela Desveaux.

Three of the tracks on the release see Desveaux once again utilising the drumming and fine production skills of Howard Bilerman, the former drummer with The Arcade Fire. Early in her career, whilst playing guitar and singing backing vocals with a number of bluegrass and country bands in her native Montreal, she came to the attention of a Bilerman, a recording engineer and the owner of Hotel2Tango Studios. Desveaux made such an impression on him that he recorded and played drums on her debut record Wandering Eyes and also on the tracks ‘If Ever I Loved’, ‘Wedding Song’ and ‘Carolina Ways’ from this release. All of the songs were also mastered by Harris Newman, who has worked with amongst others Howe Gelb, Lambchop, Wolf Parade and The Acorn.

Opener ‘If Ever I Loved’ is a beautiful lament on the familiar Country theme of lost love. On ‘Wedding Song’ Desveaux draws influence from her roots and the traditional Irish folk ballads that were a key part of her musical heritage when growing up in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. The lullaby feel of the song hides a darker lyrical theme of marrying too young. Having seen a lot of young women getting married around her, Desveaux couldn’t understand their confidence and ability to commit so young. She sees a certain sadness in a marriage not entirely based on love.

‘You To Remind Me’ was recorded with the same line-up as Desveaux’s second record The Mighty Ship. It’s a song in which Angela addresses the difficulty in making the big decisions on life and the people who remind you that you made the right choice. As she says in the track...”I’ve got you to remind me what I’m running from...”.

‘Let me Roll It’ is a cover of the classic Wings number. Angela identified with McCartney’s amazing sense of melody and his ear for a catchy chorus, as this, like many song writers, is something she strives for in her own work. Desveaux’s beautiful vocal and alternative arrangement make the song her own.

about

Angela Desveaux Montreal, Québec

“Angela Desveaux reconciles the bluer-than-blue tone of old-time country with the sun-kissed pastels of classic California rock – pulling off that alchemical fusion with a guileless grace seldom seen among more doctrinaire alt-country troops.” - Harp
